The architecture ball last night was awesome. But before I get onto the pics and stuff, the most bizzare thing ever happened!

Bare with me, this might seem kind of convoluted...

...Anyway, we were going manic on the dance floor because some song we like had come on and my camera flew out of Paul's pocket (he'd been looking after it because I only had a pretty but inpractical clutch bag) and hit the floor. It didn't look broken but the batteries and memory card flew out.

So I put them back in. But because I only have one card and use the cable, I never really get it out so I couldn't remember exactly how it went (plus the cider of course) so I didn't shove it all the way in. I turned the camera on to check that it still worked and the first thing I saw was that the card was full. Oh shit! I thought. The card shouldn't have been full so it must be broken. I clicked onto the view button to see what it claimed was on there - and nearly fainted!

It was a pic of the restaurant in Brno train station!!! The pictures on the card were the ones from this trip which I thought had been wiped off by the internet cafe guy!

I was boggling and boggling, and I took the card out, put it in properly and there were my ball pictures back. So at the end of the night when we got home I downloaded them, took the card out again, put it not quite all the way in and downloaded my Czech Republic pics! I just ... I'm really stupidly excied by this but OMG what are the chances? I still don't really understand what the hell happened. Weird weird weird!

So was well as the pictures from last night, there's a long-overdue two and a half year old Czech Republic spam on the horizon! Wooooohoooo!

Btw why do I look nice in the solo pics but in the ones with me and Paul we look weird? )

I'm sure you all remember this little fellow

Photobucket

I've been obsessing about all things Czech again recently, and I was looking at the official website of the city of Brno. And here's what they have to say about him:

What is the true story of the Brno dragon? Nobody knows for sure. In Trutnov it is said that the "dragon" was killed in his den by the servants of Sir Albrecht Trut when they were establishing the town in 1006. A few years later Prince Oldrich summoned an assembly to Brno to appoint his son as Margrave of Moravia. Many noblemen were present at the occasion. One of them was Sir Albrecht Trut who came with all his entourage, bringing the stuffed "dragon" as a gift for the Prince. The Prince is said to have had it hung by three chains in the entrance gate of the Town Hall for all to see. There are other rumours that the dragon was brought back by the crusaders from one of their crusades, and others have heard that it was presented to the gentlemen of the Town Hall by a Turkish Sultan. The people of Brno, however, are convinced that the dragon was never in fact brought to the city by anybody. He is said to have lived in Brno upon the River Svratka in his cave, tormenting the people from both near and far. When he was hungry, the dragon devoured whatever was available. People were scared of the beast but did not know how to get rid of him. The councilmen pledged a grand reward of one hundred gold coins but nobody took up the offer. One day a journeyman-butcher, who roamed throughout the world, entered the Blue Lion Inn. Everyone in the inn was talking only about the dragon. The journeyman listened, and then he said: "I shall rid you of that dragon. Just fetch me a large ox-pelt and a sack of unslaked lime." The people of Brno were suspicious of him, but brought what he wanted. The butcher sewed the lime into the ox-pelt, loaded it onto a wagon, and disappeared. When he arrived at the point in the river where the dragon had his lair, he put the pelt on the ground and waited. After a short while, the dragon crept up and took up the pelt. Having devoured it all, the dragon washed it down with the water of the River Svratka, and went to have a rest. This proved to be a mistake, for the lime began to boil inside and the dragon kept on expanding until he burst. Joy knew no bounds in Brno. The butcher got his reward and continued to wander the world. Since then the citizens of Brno have never again had to fear any beast.

It would have been more fun if it had burst after swallowing a giant snake...

My essay is done - at least the rough draft. I have plenty of time to go over it.

Anyway, these are the buildings I'm writing about, should anyone care. You probably won't, but on the other hand there are pretty pictures of Prague!

Another holiday, another journey, another reminder how fucking badly designed trains are. Now actually in this case my own journey wasn't unpleasant, it was more of a general observation. The train from Sheffield to Lincoln has this space at the end where cases, wheelchairs and pushchairs are supposed to go. It took a grand total of four cases, one pushchair and one wheelchair to cause CHAOS! I took my case away at that point and managed to jam it into the seat with me to make more room and another person did the same. Then two more wheelchairs got on. The three of them were jammed together at the end with the rest of the cases while half the seats in the carriage if not more were empty. Utterly ridiculous. I'm sure there must be a better system than that. I spent most of the journey thinking of how I could redesign train carriages to make them suck less.

I enjoyed the Sheffield to Totnes route quite a lot. I was well stocked up with food and had a window seat with a table and everything. I never get sick of looking at warehouses and stuff either.

Then I was met by the parents and came home. Toyah is huge now and her ears stick right up like a bats instead of flopping over. After tea I looked at some books on Prague with mum. She was most amused by the name Boleslav the Cruel, who does kind of sound like someone Jack Kirby made up. Then I went on and on about the Dientzenhofer family. Fun!

Didn't do much over the weekend to speak of except indulge in an orgy of fashion books. I always do this at the end of term when I'm tired of whatever the project is. I feel like I don't have enough fashion books so I need to get to a library. Today I read a detective story and did some sewing, just random little bits and pieces on square bits of fabric. I'm going to put them all together as some kind of quilt or wall hanging one day. I also briefly popped into the architecure firm where I worked, to say hello and see how the projects are going.

For some reason whenever I'm at home I always get so damn hungry! I don't know if it's because it's colder than in Lincoln (unheated house with big rooms) But damn. Can't. Stop. Eating.

I was on youtube and the link popped up for this video,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AAJWjUKtPg

It's from the film Operation Daybreak, about the assasination of Reinhard Heydrich.

I've been in the crypt where some of the assasins died. You can see the bullet holes in the wall still.

[info]lasergirl, I've got you a wartime RAF eagle, a mechanic's badge, a later Canadian version of same, and a random rear gunner's badge that the guy thought might be Canadian because it's not padded like the RAF ones but otherwise looks like one. I'll send them when I have your new adress, along with the Bader book.
