[music |Rainy Night in Soho - Pogues]

A couple of weeks ago Paul was roped into working on Saturday due to some kind of annual stock take. As I had the day to myself I decided to go to Spalding as I haven't been yet and Paul never fancied it. And I had a good day taking pictures and discovered a junk shop which sold me two books, some vintage plates and some vintage jewellery for the princely sum of £3!

[music |Dark Streets of London - Pogues]

I got my stuff for the crit tomorrow printed out with no problem but after that two dodgy things happened. First I got a call from that guy last year who texted me going on about wanting to kill himself because I only wanted to be friends. Basically he'd broken up with his girlfriend just before and I got caught in the crossfire, I don't remember all the details now. But he phoned today, called me by my name and everything, then I was like wha..? And he said he thought he'd got a wrong number and I played along. But ick. Why, a year later? Can't anything ever just dissapear into obscurity anymore?

Then I was walking downstairs, tripped on my coat and broke one of my big boots. About the last wearable pair left. Crap.

I went out and bought two pairs of shoes in the sale. All my shoes have just fallen apart now, they're mainly second hand to begin with and I never bother getting them re-heeled anymore because the new heels just fall off and it costs more than the shoes cost anyway half the time. I got a lace-up pair with a thick heel, slightly 30s style, for £6 and a 70s-ish pair of slingbacks in black snake-textured patent stuff with a big heel and platform for £15. I feel all kinds of rejuvenated, not seedy like I was starting to going round in the falling apart ones.

I'm going to have to get new clothes as well, they're basically now something I need as opposed to just want. I've had to ditch a few dresses because they'd got to the stage where they never really come clean and you feel like you smell, and I have these two cardigans I love to pieces which are ripped beyond repair and will have to be retired. I've had most of my clothes for years. I don't know if it's because they're just not meant to last that long or whether it's that I wear things on normal days that are maybe meant for going out in (A lot of girls at uni only wear dresses and skirts when they go our for example) but either way I need new stuff. Yay for all the sales that are on at the moment!

We've been planning our trip to Barnsley some more and part of it will involve nipping over to Leeds, which I'm looking forward to rather a lot:)

[music |Fairytale of NY the anthem of this time of year]

The architecture ball last night was awesome. But before I get onto the pics and stuff, the most bizzare thing ever happened!

Bare with me, this might seem kind of convoluted...

...Anyway, we were going manic on the dance floor because some song we like had come on and my camera flew out of Paul's pocket (he'd been looking after it because I only had a pretty but inpractical clutch bag) and hit the floor. It didn't look broken but the batteries and memory card flew out.

So I put them back in. But because I only have one card and use the cable, I never really get it out so I couldn't remember exactly how it went (plus the cider of course) so I didn't shove it all the way in. I turned the camera on to check that it still worked and the first thing I saw was that the card was full. Oh shit! I thought. The card shouldn't have been full so it must be broken. I clicked onto the view button to see what it claimed was on there - and nearly fainted!

It was a pic of the restaurant in Brno train station!!! The pictures on the card were the ones from this trip which I thought had been wiped off by the internet cafe guy!

I was boggling and boggling, and I took the card out, put it in properly and there were my ball pictures back. So at the end of the night when we got home I downloaded them, took the card out again, put it not quite all the way in and downloaded my Czech Republic pics! I just ... I'm really stupidly excied by this but OMG what are the chances? I still don't really understand what the hell happened. Weird weird weird!

So was well as the pictures from last night, there's a long-overdue two and a half year old Czech Republic spam on the horizon! Wooooohoooo!

Btw why do I look nice in the solo pics but in the ones with me and Paul we look weird? )

I'm using my Von Trapp curtains to make a copy of this:

Because dude, tell me that isn't the most beautiful thing you've ever seen! When I first saw it (in a book from the library on highlights from the Costume Institute) I just whimpered or wet myself or something. I'd love to wear it for a ball at some Czech zamek *wibbles all over*

Some day I'm going to try and make a copy replicating the original fabric. My curtains look like this ) But it gives me a chance to experiment with the shape anyway.

Incidentally using an old-style non-electric Singer is really hard. You have to manipulate the fabric one-handed while turning the handle with the other. I miss my Toyota industrial, which I hope isn't rusting in a barn somewhere as I don't know what the parents did with it when they moved out.

It's been up and down since I started taking the stuff, but one great thing is I've started getting into all the thing I've been neglecting while I was drinking too much. I've suddenly started taking an interest in my appearance again. Whatever that sounds like, believe me it's a sign that I'm getting better.

So today I went round the charity shops. And I bought a dress and shoes!

Warning cam whoring behind cut! )

I mean, even having got some red lipstick, just an end of line cheap smeary one off the market, makes me feel so much better! Yay!

I don't usually like the idea of white wedding dresses for me. If I ever get married - which is looking increasingly unlikely seeing men just seem to irritate me when they're after relationships and I don't think I swing the other way - I'm going to wear green. Because it's the colour of willpower. And drunken psuedo-Irishness:p

Then I saw this dress, and seriously wibbled. It's just beautiful!

It's a shame you can't just have a wedding on your own without the actual getting married part.

On Saturday I took a friend up to the hospital so she could visit a freind of hers who I don't know. There was very bad news and I kind of turned into this spunky London blitz girl running round with hot cups of tea and stuff, which usually isn't what I'm like at all! I felt wrung out by the end of the day!

Sunday I started on my essay. I get to do Prague! it's about comparing/contrasting two buildings from different historical periods. I'm doing one from the Baroque and one from the First Republic. I'll post pictures of them and ramblings in a seperate post at some stage.

Monday was uneventful

Tuesday I went to a Chap rally on campus for a friend who's running for SU president. I wore a purple and blue 1950s dress suit, a hat with a veil, purple court shoes, a jappaned metal 1950s necklace and I had my hair up. I have never looked so stunning! Sometimes I forget how awesome I am. I don't have pictures but I wouldn't be surprised if some turned up out of the woodwork somewhere. We certainly attracted a lot of attention! I was handing out fliers and I thought people would tell me to piss off (as they generally do when you're handing out fliers or something) but I got rid of the whole lot! Then I went for a drink with another friend. We must have looked interesting walking into Wetherspoons, me still in my costume and him in an awesome bowler hat!

Then it was Tuesday night, aka the Great Earthquake of 2008!

I was in bed asleep having some kind of dream. Then I was woken by the most enormous bang, to feel the whole buildng shaking. Everything on my shelves was rattling around. Being still half asleep my first thought was what I'd made the building fall down in some way and I was all "way to go dumbass" at the same time as being bloody terrified. I lay there for a while and the building was still shaking a little bit and I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on! Then I heard my flatmates running around asking if anyone knew what had happened, so I got up and we'd all sussed out it was an earthquake by then. Everyone was ringing their friends in other areas to find out if they'd felt it. Some people had gone outside but my flatmates didn't think we needed to. I was really worried, not knowing whether to go or not or whether there was going to be another one. I was going to go and grab my laptop and head outside, but in the end I just went for a few minutes for some fresh air and to try and calm down. I did eventually, and even went back to sleep.

Wedneday I was in a complete mess all day, I was still shocked and we had this horrible workshop thing in the morning that wound me up. It was like a brainstorming session thing where we all had to discuss our ideas and draw something on a giant piece of paper. I hate things like that! I always think everyone's looking at me thinking how stupid I am. Eventually I just had to leave because I was feeling so awful. It was the earthquake really I think. I'm actually fine at talking about my ideas usually. Admittedly I'm better when it's something that's finished rather than something I'm just starting. Barbara liked my idea but not how I wanted to design it. Crap.

Thursday I got my comics and had drinks with a friend, and went round charity shops looking for a pair of gloves for tonight (they're anouncing the election results) but couldn't find any.

Today I remembered two charity shops I hadn't looked in as they're away from the centre of town. So I checked them out and found the perfect pair of long white gloves with little pearly buttons. Woohooo!

I have another awesome outfit lined up for tonight! *bounce*

[music |Rebels of the Sacred Heart - Flogging Molly]

Now I'm at home there just doesn't seem to be time in the day, there's just so many things I want to do and catch up on, as well as spending time with my family. I've hardly got online at all the last couple of days. I've been doing some sewing, nothing major, just little purses, but it takes my mind off the harbourmaster project and It's nice to be doing something different. I've finally re-dyed my hair too and no longer have manky roots, yay! Unfortunately I'm no good at getting the dye on without spreading it all over my face as well. It's mostly off now but I looked like Mystique earlier!

Went into Exeter today and picked up a few interesting bits and pieces in charity shops. I also finally got round to photographing all those sewing patterns I bought in Gainsborogh.

Jeez. I haven't updated for ages, what with the deadline and just being tired. I have stuff to talk about, but I can't get it clear in my mind right now, so I'm going to just post some pictures of the coat I made for my sister for her birthday, over the Christmas holidays. Clothes wise, fancy coats are the main thing she's into. I had some patchwork panels I'd made ages before and just expanded them and made some new ones till they were big enough to cut the coat pattern pieces out of. I couldn't check the size properly without her knowing what I was doing so I had to measure one of her other coats and try and cut a pattern from that. The buttons are old bakelite ones. It's not industrial standard but I'm pleased with it and my sister likes it, which is what matters:)

[music |Salty Dog - Flogging Molly]

* I went to visit the New Giant Shopping Mall in Plymuff, which has somehow gone from being unifinished to opening for buisness in my absence. It's only slightly redeemable, because it has a lot of shoe shops and a very nice chocolate shop which is also fairtrade. That however doesn't altert the fact that indoor shopping centres suck (I'd rather get rained on in a windy high street any day) and that the building is ugly as fuck and doesn't make a remotely nice backdrop for the poignant bomb-damaged church. Not that what was there before is really any better though.

* My Grandad phoned and thought I was doing law. Do law and architecture have anything in common at all?? We had an interesting chat about his visit to the former East Germany though.

* We just drove for half an hour to find a pub that was open on boxing day, then me and mum talked, and my brother and dad did. Mum says it's been boring when I was away because she ended up sitting there while they talked incesantly about chainsaws and cows (my brother works on a dairy farm). Mum and I talked about architecture, art, the decor of the pub, and fashion. My brother started moaning because I was telling mum about some bridal wear someone at my uni had designed which seemed very boring and generic. We thought that was a bit much, all things considered. Then on the way back he was being a OMGNazi about music and getting dad to skip past all my tracks on the randomiser, then telling me I wasn't a proper music lover because I didn't pay proper attention to the support act at the Dropkicks gig as I was so overexcited about seeing them and molesting Ken Casey because he wrote Upstarts and Broken Hearts OMG. My family is such fun!

*I went to see my sister riding in a sort of Christmas display at the stables, it was fun but I almost froze to death! Dad got a pudding as he's a member of staff, and the world's scariest santa showed up.

*Enjoyed the Doctor Who special yesterday!

*Started reading X Men fic and freaked out because the fandom is scary and wanky. Looked at scans from the comics and might go hunting down back issues when I get back to Lincoln but on the other hand might not as I'll probably end up a ball of angst all the time. I outdid myself by managing to sniffle a whole lot at a Romy fan video despite not having felt at all miserable beforehand.

*Talking of comics, I'm so excited about the Sinestro Corps!!! And I hope Nero will play a part so I get to read about him more:)

*I've realised that, much as I love my family, I'm looking forward to being back in Lincoln!

GCSOP = Gratuatous clothing and shoe obsession post [Oct. 4th, 2004|09:47 pm]

[mood | nervous]
[music |Bottle of Smoke - Pogues]

I'm going to Killerton tomorrow so i've been a wee bit nervous and twitchy all day. Couldn't settle down to do anything so i decided to nip into Plymouth in the afternoon to pick up the shoes i was having mended, and possibly buy a pair i fell madly in love with in Dorothy Perkins the other day. As i was coming up the steps of the bus station i met [info]vampgirl and her freind on their way down, taking some photos for an art college assignment, and got snapped against the graffiti down there:) Then i went straight to DP and tried on the two pairs of shoes i really wanted (both very 1930s style) and one pair i liked but slightly less. All were size four, all from the same range, and yet the nicer pairs in size 4 were too big, whist the other pair fitted perfectly! WTF? They didn't have either of the nice pairs in a 3, which pissed me off. I went round every other shop to see if there was anything similar but there was nothing quite as nice (This season's shoes are amazing though, something about the combo of round toe and narrow heel is just incredibly sexy) I collected my shoes from the menders, though, and was quite surprised that he'd managed to do all of them, despite having warned me that he might not have been able to fix the heels in as they were all so knackered! So i have my other 30s-ish shoes back, my mega platform stilettos, and some ankle books with leopard print that i haven't worn since i lost the heel wandering desperatly round Paris trying to find Notre Dame two years ago.

Went to Derrys looking for nice tweeed to make a suit out of but found none. Saw the most perfect tweed suit ever in Debenhams (1930s again, bias-cut skirt and fake fur trim) , but found the jacket alone was 150 quid so that was the end of that! Stopped off in the Debenhams cafe and had an iced coffee with irish cream syrup and a load of whipped cream on top. Back at the bus station i felt like a silly mag to look at so i picked up Elle and, because there was no Vogue, Marie Claire. This season's look is very me, but it doesn't really make a difference as i don't buy clothes in the high-street anymore to speak of, i just feel guilty buying something i know i could make, unless it's in a charity shop and costs less than the fabric would. Not that i get round to making it half the time (if it's just something i want to wear and not a creative design i have hope for), but that just shows i didn't want it that badly. Maybe a crash course in shoemaking would be a deterrant in that department too. I bought a skirt in Miss S (Selfridges, not Sixty!) a while back and i've worn it once because the shape is odd, i also fell in love with a dress in bay during the summer and only ended up wearing it at home/work, funny how you love something so much in the shop but not on you....

Came home. Ate. Had a bath and washed my hair. about to have a lemsip as i'm still snotty. I must remember to take a hanky with me tomorrow and not sniff!
